Precious 1st Credit Card at 13 years old!

Homeschooling certainly has its difficulties but the freedom and responsibility to prepare our children for this world is something I take very seriously.

One of the things I’ve been teaching my children is the importance of Credit and the financial power that can be gained from it. Not jus to be consumers but builders of wealth with money and credit. Yes, credit is jus as powerful as cash and together you can use them to build wealth.

Most of us messed up our credit in our late teens in college (unless we had parents who was putting things in our name while we were babies lol). So why wait and let our children find out the hard way and the long way when we can teach them right now? Jus because many of us may have learned the hard way about credit doesn’t mean our children have to, right?

So shortly after she turned 13, I added my oldest daughter as an authorized user on my American Express Card and worked with the rep to give her her own personal credit limit to teach her financial responsibility with credit. By the time she’s 17 and continues to apply what I’m teaching her, she will will have 700 and 800 plus credit scores that many adults don’t even get to see until their 30’s and up if they see those scores at all.

One of my children’s homeschooling curriculum is on Credit which I put together based off what I’ve learned and applied. Precious was right there watching as I paid off $19,000 in debt in less than a year in order for us to move comfortably from our old home to the new one.

Don’t wait to teach children the importance of financial responsibility and don’t let them learn this by trial and error when they got you there to either show them or get them connected with those who can. No excuses.
